Американские военные корабли, между которыми в ходе Гражданской войны [Civil War] 9 марта 1862 произошло морское сражение в бухте Хэмптон-Роудс [Hampton Roads], шт. Вирджиния (в российских источниках известно как Хэмптонский бой). "Монитор" - плоскодонный однобашенный корабль - сражался на стороне Союза [Union], "Мерримак" - затонувший фрегат северян, поднятый и восстановленный южанами под новым именем "Вирджиния" - на стороне конфедератов [Confederates]. Четырехчасовой бой не принес успеха ни одной из сторон, однако обе объявили себя победителями. Это было первое в истории столкновение броненосцев [ironclad] (военных кораблей с металлической обшивкой)
